Interests

John Whittet snowboarding in Steamboat Springs, CO, 2007

I enjoy being outside surrounded by nothing but nature, and would like to hike and camp much more often in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains. I snowboard during the winter and sail during the warmer months, at least where I can manage to escape the real world.

In addition to the work experience listed on my resume, I've also taught sailing (smaller boats and windsurfing) and ballroom dancing, not to mention odd jobs for my parents, who are self-employed in the printing and graphic design business.

John Whittet in front of rolling vineyards in Italy, 2006

I've traveled fairly extensively, including most of the United States, various locales in the Caribbean, Canada, and Western Europe. I had the unique experience this past summer of being in Rome for the World Cup semifinals and on the Amalfi coast for the finals. (Note for the uninformed: both places are in Italy, and Italy won the World Cup.)

I love consumer electronics, and am hard pressed not to convince myself to spend way too much on a huge plasma television. Given the choice of Mac or Windows PC, I'll choose the Mac every time. I also enjoy reading, and usually have at least one book in progress at any given time. I've just finished reading David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest, which is a hugely engrossing read. I'm on to Blindness by José Saramago and Life of Pi by Yann Martel.

Weekends I can be found working on personal projects or, god forbid, homework during the day and out being social once the sun goes down. Online, you can find me around Newsvine.

John Whittet at Villa Cimbrone in Ravello, Italy, 2006

I'm currently living in a 150-year-old plantation house that supposedly once housed Bob Dylan. He either lived in my room or the one accross the hall. I tell everyone it was my room.

Over the summer I bought a 2003 Kawasaki Ninja 250, and I enjoy taking it out in the country and cruising around the rolling hills of Virginia.

Projects

In addition to my portfolio, I have a fair number of programming assignments I've done for various classes, some of which are faily cool. I need to work on getting them all online, but until then, check out:

Grand Theft Pigeon, a skeet-shooting Java applet game and

a whole mess of code and documentation for a wireless (socket communication) robot client/server application that handles almost streaming video and keyboard control, which is unfortunately pretty useless unless you have a $1000 ER1 robot.
