TO THE MEMORY OF
James Weittet, of Kintillo,
our first recorded ancestor;
to

Our Kith and Kin,
who, having finished life’s course, have entered
into their everlasting rest;
and to

Their Descendants,
whose names are enumerated in the following
pages,
THIS RECORD
is affectionately inscribed by
The Compilers.

Behind us lie the long-forgotten dead!
  No record have they left of word or deed;
We know they lived, and must have loved—did plead
Their urgent quest—they smiled and laughed, and shed
The tears of sorrow ere their line was sped,
Just as we each to-day fulfill our meed
Of duty, though unchronicled the need
That ever hour demands, until the head,
Silvered with years, is lowly laid; yet theirs
Were dauntless hearts, that met the toil of life,
And battles for evolving good, ’mid cares
And fears; and we’re th’ inheritors of strife
They have bequeathed, which, though all unawares
We take, ’tis ours to add to and make rife.

Introduction.

It is a common saying that “every Scotsman has a pedigree,” the rightful inference from which is that he esteems the memory of his father, and loves to recall them, in deed or story. It is not necessary that these be illustrious in the estimation of others; it is enough to know the channel whence one’s life and being was derived to make it interesting; and so it becomes a most natural inquiry, “Who were our fathers?” Though we are conscious that among our past generations were none who have left their mark on the roll of fame, yet we have the assurance that each was a living energy in the great world’s work, and that in their humble spheres there has been left behind a sense of duty performed—how faithfully will remain to us and to our children after us as an incentive towards higher honorable effort, and towards interest in such records are contained in the following pages. A much respected member of the family evidently had this thought in mind when, in her endeavor to train her “ain bairns” to walk in the right paths, she told them that “nane o’ the name were ever heard o’ behind a jail door!” and it was surely a good lesson she meant to convey, that however lowly the lot to which Providence has been pleased to assign us, yet it is in ever the way of righteousness which is the path of honor.

No doubt it is because of the humble sphere occupied by our progenitors that the record is so scant, going no farther back than 1657. From that time backward no reliable trace has been preserved, though from thence to the present the record is fairly full, as the parish records begin then to be better kept and afford sufficient proofs to corroborate the floating traditions in the family. The name being comparatively rare, and, with a few straggling exceptions in more recent years, confined to a small district of country, it would have afforded much satisfaction had the material been extant to have enabled us to have gone back a few more generations, in which case the common ancestry would have been discovered, and the source from whence came those others who also bear the name would now be known; but we regret to say that is not now a possibility.

Of the name there are several forms, although the persons bearing it are known to belong to the same branch of the family. Each seems to have spelt it without other regard than to his own ideas of phonetic requirement, which the several parish records vary quite as much, perhaps because of the inability of the session clerks of that day to apprehend a form of letters that would satisfy the sound as pronounced in the idiom of the various parishes where applicants for registration resided.

It is somewhat curious to note that in several of the most ancient record both in Dundee and Perth, the name is spelt in the form in which it has become almost universally the custom to write it, thus, “Whittet,” though during the last century it is found in the records spelt in many various ways; thus we have it as “Quhittitt,” “Witet,” “Weetet,” “Weetite,” “Witite,” “Wytet.”

The earliest mention of the name we have been able to find is in an old document in the archives of the Glover Incorporation of Dundee, dated January 12, 1516, where a William Quhittit is one of several witnesses whose named are appended to the paper.

This old document is of much interest, not only as affording an early occurrence of the name, but also because of the subject matter to which it related. It confers authority on the Glover trade to protect their craft from unskillful persons who might invade their town, and shows the nature of the restrains exercised over trade in the olden times. It is found in a volume entitled The Burgh Laws of Dundee, by A. J. Warden, pp. 406-’7, and given here as a thing of curiosity in these days of freedom, and showing that he who bore our name in that day is found in good company, being among the worthies entrusted with the management of civic affairs in the long ago.

The name occurs again in another document, also in possession of the Glover Incorporation of Dundee, which we take from the same volume, and is as follows:

“Mortification for ye use of ye Poor and godly Wives.—28th March 1634.—The qlk day Alex. boytur, Skinner, hes of his frie liberalitie and mowett be ye Spiritt of God yr to Donitt and mortifiyet to ye use of ye pure of Skinner craft of ye burt of Dundie, ane hunder markis money of Scotland. Wm Stenson, Patrick Burt, Wm QUHITTIT, and others.”

From the History of Dundee by McLaren (1874) we extract the following, found in the ancient rent rolls of the burgh:

“1565—Item furth of ane other myln pertaining to ye Laird of Fyntrie, occeepiet be Thomas Quhittet, lyened on Dichtie, to ye Choristaris yerlie Threttie ss. iiid.; and furth of the same myln to ye Rev’d Chaiplanrie, teirlie, twenty-sex ss. viij.d.”

In 1612 there was a John Whittet, a merchant in Dundee, and from the same records we find a John Whittet was convenor of the Glover Incorporation from 1713 to 1728, with the exceptions of three intervals of about a year each; and John Whittet, Jr., convenor of the Baker Incorporation in 1814.

In the troublous times of the rebellion of 1745 a William Whittet, merchant, is found bailing out his friend from jail who had been arrested for drinking to the health of Prince Charlie!

In the records of the city of Perth we find that a Robert Whittet was a maltman there in 1725, and that in this year he and his wife, May Bell, had a daughter registered, named Agnes, and two others, Susanna and Jean, were registered as born in 1726 and 1728. We find also that a John Whittet was trades bailie in the city magistracy in 1775, and again mentioned as in office in 1787 and 1791.

The following items are found in the register of the Parish of Rhynd, Perthshire:

  • July 21, 1727, Thomas Weetet and Elizabeth Allan were proclaimed for marriage.
  • May 18, 1765, James Alexander, in Craighead, and Jean Weetet in Elcho, gave a half crown for behoof of the poor for proclamation.
  • February 17, 1769, George Weetet, in Grange of Elcho, and Isabel Norwell, in Frostyfaulds, belonging to Grange, were married upon the 17th day of March, 1769.
  • November 22, 1790, William Wittite and Margaret Low, both in this parish, after having been regularly proclaimed, in order to marriage, according to church rule, were married November 22, 1790.

A more recent examination of the records of the parishes to the north of the city of Perth has revealed a goof many instances of the name occurring. In Coupar Angus there was a Patrick Whittet born November 6, 1684, and William Whittet and Jane Sprunt were married July 6, 1685, and five births of children are recorded by them, the last a daughter named Jean, May 7, 1710. A James Whittet was tenant of “Coldward” and he and his spouse, Margaret Brown, record the birth of a daughter, named Margaret, June 14, 1752.

The parishes of Cargill, Collace, Kinclaven, and St. Martins each give instances, and during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries they are somewhat numerous—indeed, “too numerous to mention.” As an odd circumstance, however, we find recorded that John and James Whittet, both of the Parish of Collace, had daughters, both named Jean and baptized on the same day—February 24, 1751.

The records of the parish of Abernyte were also examined from 1726 to recent times, and several instances of the name found, both as to births, marriages and deaths. It is found also that members of the family had strayed in a few instances into the kingdom of Fife and into Kinross-shire; but there they are not numerous, while in parishes more to the eastward, or in Forfarshire, except in the city of Dundee, there were no instances of the name found. In Dundee, however, there were many discovered, both of ancient and recent date, but of the older instances we could not find a place for them in our roll, though the names of several of our seventh and eighth generations will be found resident there.

We should not omit to mention that the highest gift in possession of the city was conferred on one of the name, when James Peter Whittet was chosen to the office of Lord Provost of the city of Perth, in 1890, nor that his term of office was a most important and successful one. We regret that the missing link between our branch of the family and his has been irretrievably lost.

Of the derivation of the name there is little to form a clue. A “Smith,” a “Taylor,” a “Soutar” or a “Wright” may readily find a reason for their family cognomen in the occupation of some early wights who labored for the common good, and whose title to other names was forgotten in the usefulness of their craft to their neighbors. So also a “Jackson” is easily thought of as the son of Jack; and a “Wilson” as the son of Will; a “Hardie” may have shown such physical endurance as to be noted in public service; but to the name of “Whittet” neither occupation nor personal characteristic give more than a far-fetched clew to its origin, so far we have ever learned. At the same time we have to confess that no philologist has yet appeared among its members who has undertaken the investigation, nor has it so far been of sufficient interest to excite in any one a desire to discover or apply a meaning to it. One has been propounded, however, by whether it is founded only on such verity as tradition affords, or is but a fanciful suggestion of some waggish clansman, it is not important to say; but the story may as well be given, if for no better reason than the amusement in it. It has been the practice from time immemorial for the lieges of the city of Perth to bleach their clothes on the “Inches,” depending on the natural process of sunning and frequent watering to bring them to a whiteness satisfactory to the fastidious taste of Scottish matrons, i. e., that they should rival the driven snow! Perth was the royal resident in olden times, and the castle stood in the immediate neighborhood, as we know that from its “gilten bower,” the king was a spectator of the battle of the North Inch, which Sir Walter Scott has made famous in the Fair Maid of Perth. It was only just that the royal household should make the same use of the Inch for the beautifying of the royal linen, and thus it became the duty of one of our progenitors to see that it was duly cared for and watered—in short, in Scottish phrase, to “Weet-it!” If there are any who hesitate to accept this as the derivation of our family cognomen, we will have to lay on them the onus of finding a better, and until then we may be satisfied with knowing that it is in the same line—and quite as good—as that of the Smith and the Soutar.

It has been suggested that the name is a corruption of “Whitehead,” from which several forms are supposed to be derived, as Withered, Withers, Whiterod, etc. This may be so, but we do not wish to confess to corruption in any form, so we would turn to another source from which the name may have come, and one which we think more likely to be correct than either of the foregoing. It is of record that there were families bearing the name living at the Weets of Baiglie, and that their name as recorded is spelled Weetet, as did our own immediate ancestor (William, v.). In olden times it was quite as frequent to name one from his dwelling-place, as from his occupation, or some peculiarity in his personal character, and thus we have the names Abernethy, Glasgow, Worcester, etc., and so out progenitors may have become known, and may themselves have accepted the cognomen of Weetet, because of their place of residence being the Weets.

Though the village of the Weets o’ Baiglie has altogether disappeared, not even a foundation being visible to indicate that it was once the scene of busy life, yet the name is familiarly used in the neighborhood to designate the sport, and it is well known in the annals—or rather the traditions— of Scottish history. It was situated on the road leading from Edinburgh to the north, high on the hill, as the road passes over beyond Glen Farg, and was a place of difficult ascent and descent in travel. Several years ago the road was made to detour through the Glen and round by the level ground about a mile to the east, and since that time the road has been little used, and the dwelling places contiguous to it have ceased to invite the traveller, or the villager to make there his abode. When the top of the hill is reached at “The Weets” a magnificent view is obtained of the valley of the Tay, and the story goes that when the Roman cohorts reached this point their invasion they were struck with such admiration as brought forth the exclamation, “Behold the Tiber! Behold the field of Mars!” When the grandeur of the scene is remembered the story will not be doubted by Scotchmen, though it may raise the question, which was also raised in the mind of the author of Waverly, whether the Tiber is worthy of the comparison! He has given his opinion in the lines which we have quoted in the biographical note attached to the record of William, v., to which the reader is referred.

As to locality, investigation has not been able to find any of the name in the larger towns of the north, south, or west of Scotland, but through inconsiderable anywhere, it is mostly in the city of Perth, and the parishes in the immediate neighborhood they now, and seem always to have had, their habitation. There are several branches bearing the name, but though all seem confined to the same small radius of country—that included in the district surrounding the city of Perth—the uniting point or main stem has been lost in the remote past, so that it is not now possible to reach the common ancestor. The following list related only to one branch, beginning about 1630-’35 with James Wettit, of Kintillo, who recorded the birth of six children—four sons and two daughters—between the years 1660 and 1674, in the session books of the parish of Dunbarney. From thence not much doubt exists, for the records and the information within the knowledge of the older members of the family have been able to supply a pretty accurate line of descent, and this it has been our endeavor to portray in the following pages.

It should be mentioned that we are indebted to the painstaking efforts of our cousin William Whittet, of 39 Castle Street, Dundee, for most of the information obtained herein. He spent many days in the examination of the parish records, and also made many pilgrimages to places and persons from whom he had any expectation of finding light. While we will all be grateful to him for this interesting service, we feel assured that he will be gratified that he has been enabled to afford interesting information to so many who are of his own kith and kin.

Whittet: A Family Record

First Generation.

I. James Weittit, of Kintillo, parish of Dunbarney born —— 1635? Married Margaret Bu—— (the surname is undecipherable in the record), both of the Parish of Dunbarney, July 23, 1657.

Issue.

  1. John, born January 8, 1660.
  2. Margaret, born November 13, 1663.
  3. James, born August 26, 1666.
  4. Christian, born January 23, 1669.
  5. Robert, born September 3, 1671.
  6. Andrew, born August 15, 1674.

There was a John Weittit who registered the birth of a son, Hen (Henry?), on August 3, 1657. While the above is the farthest back record we have been able to trace with certainty, it is probable that his may have been the father, and the child whose birth is recorded a younger brother of James. It will be notices, as strengthening this idea, that James name his first-born boy John. It is well known to have been an almost unvarying rule in Scotland to name the first-born son after his grandfather, and the first-born daughter after her grandmother. This was done by way of honoring their parents, and was, on the part of the old folks, usually expected to be conferred as a right. If we may suppose that James conformed to this custom, though the John mentioned in the record may have been but a brother, yet we may conclude that his father’s name was John; but diligent search has failed to find it clearly as a matter of record, as we can do no more than advance the idea, considering it more satisfactory—since he must have had a father!—to think of him through a name of some kind, rather than to reckon him a nameless factor in our search after a progenitor.

Whate’er of merit may have been shown in him
Whate’er of frailty, mild or rough,
We know not—care not—though the past, so dim,
Has left not e’en his name—yet still enough
Whereon to build a record yet to come;
For better ’tis to lay foundation than
T’ inherit what hath cost us naught, like some
When cruel wealth effeminates the man.

Of the future of the children of James enumerated above the following particulars are gleaned from the records:

  • John, the oldest son, was married to Jean Mailer, April 10, 1686, and had a daughter named Margaret, the date of whose birth is not given, but from its place in the record it was probably 1687-’88.
  • Concerning Margaret, no record has been found.
  • James records the birth of a daughter—dutifully named Margaret, after his mother—born January 14, 1700. Another, named Elizabeth, born May 18, 1701; a son, named George, born September 23, 1705; another named William, born November 30, 1707; and another named John, but with no date of birth.
  • The child named Christian is recorded as having been baptized by William Pym, on March 7, 1669, and proclaimed in order to marriage to William Steward, October 16, 1698.
  • Robert is recorded as “Talyoour of Kintillo,” and had a son born November 5, 1699, and a daughter, born July 26, 1702, named respectively James and Margaret, following the usual custom previously referred to. He had also another daughter named Christian, born March 27, 1709.

As to the younger son, Andrew, he became our family progenitor, and his record follows.

Second Generation.

II. Andrew Witit [son of James. i.] born Aug. 15, 1674. Married Janet Marshall, May 27, 1697, in Dron Parish. There is an entry in Dunbarney Parish records of their having also been proclaimed there in order to marriage on May 10, 1697, the explanation of which is that, as they had lived in different parishes, the law required that the banns of marriage should be proclaimed in both.

Issue.

  1. William, born July 22, 1699.
  2. James, born October 6, 1700.
  3. Janet, born March 29, 1702.
  4. John, born July 29, 1705.
  5. Andrew, born December 7, 1708.

We have endeavored to trace the family of Andrew (ii.) in the record, but as some had removed their residence into the neighboring parishes it become a matter of much doubt, although, by associating the names and dates together, it is probable that the notes following are correct.

  • William, the eldest son, removed to the Parish of Forgandenny, where he married Janet Reid, May 16, 1731.
  • James, the second son, became our progenitor, and his record will be found following in order.
  • Of Janet, no trace could be found.
  • John married Jean Marshall in 1726, and all trace of them thereafter is lost.

Of Andrew, the youngest son, we cannot find the record of his marriage, but think he took up his residence at Kintillo, Parish of Dunbarney, where are two records, one of a daughter, named Elizabeth, born May 21, 1738, and the other, also a daughter, named Cecilia, born October, 1740.

Andrew, our progenitor, is recorded as living at Burnside of Dron, where is also recorded as living another Andrew Wetit—probably a cousin—to whom were born two daughters, one named Elizabeth, on October 16, 1692, and the other, Margaret, born August 19, 1694. There is also a record of a daughter, named Mary, being baptized on December 21, 1701, to which the named of James Kid and William Henderson are appended as witnesses.

The name Andrew seems to have been a favorable one about this time, so many instances of its occurrence being recorded. Once of this name, living in Dunbarney Parish, married Janet Livingstone, at Forgandenny, on January 25, 1675, to whom was born a son, named John, on December 20, 1679, and a daughter, named Janet, born March 7, 1696. He was probably a brother of James of Kintillo, and showed his filial affection by naming his son after his father, following the usual custom.

Yet another Andrew Wittit is recorded in Dron Parish books as having a daughter, named Helen Wytet, baptized at Ecclesiamagirdle, February 17, 1714.

And there is still another Andrew Wytet, who is recorded in the books of the Parish of Dron, as marrying Janet Laird, of Forgandenny, October 6, 1726.

Hugh Witiet, shepherd at Wester Moncrieff, recorded the birth of a son, whom he named John, March 21, 1714, and a daughter, named Elspit, born October 4, 1719.

Third Generation.

III. James Weetit [son of Andrew, ii; son of James, i.]. born at Burnside of Dron, October 6, 1700.

James had not been without his sorrows in love. He and Mary Weetit (evidently a cousin) gave their named in for proclamation in order to marriage on January 12, 1723, and were proclaimed the following day, Sabbath, January 13th, for the first time; but the record says that the forms of proclamation were not completed, and, of course, the marriage was not consummated, and that by the order of the woman! Mary had rued in time! We find, however, that she afterwards married a Francies Crombie, and the proclamations were this time made, for the first time, on November 27th, and, as if to prevent her rueing a second time, the second and third proclamations were made on the same day, December 11, 1726. James was not long, however, in finding a more willing partner; but who she was, and at what time they marriage took place we have not been able to find the record; but the books testify to their having had issue as follows:

  1. Laurence Weetit, born July 23, 1727.
  2. Jean Weetit, born December 20, 1730.

He is mentioned in the record as of Easter Moncrieff. This is the mansion house of a branch of the ancient family of Moncrieff; but in what office he was employed we have no means of ascertaining, though in all probability his was the humble duty of caring for the gardens and policies.

Fourth Generation.

IV. Lawrence Wyttet [son of James, iii.; son of Andrew, ii.; son of James, i.] Born July 23, 1727. Marries, 1st, June 19, 1752, Helen Bell, of Dunbarney Parish; married, 2d, April 17, 1769, Janet Murray.

Issue.

  1. James, born February 22, 1754.
  2. Anne, b. February 15, 1756.
  3. David, b. —— 1758.
  4. Robert, b. February 23, 1766.
  5. William, b. —— 1769.
  6. Charles, b. —— 1771.

He was the shepherd on the Hill of Dron, one of the Ochill range—which skirts the southern side of Strathearn—about six miles south from Perth. The cottage where he lived, and in which he was probably married (since the marriage is registered in the books of the Parish of Dron) still stands, occupying a very beautiful site on the side of the hill, commanding a full view of the whole surrounding country hence excellently situated in respect of seeing well to his charge. The cottage contains only a “butt and a ben,” while nearby stands a byre with stalls for two cows with a considerable garden. Its roof was originally of thatch, though it has been replaced in recent times, before it became tenantless, with tiles. It is overshadowed by great old ash trees—so old that they verify what is said of it, that it has been the dwelling place of the shepherds on Dron Hill from time immemorial. On the neighboring hill, “Balmanno,” is the Rocking Stone of Dron, a relic of Druidic rites, and an object of curiosity as a remnant of a long-past age. At the foot of this hill stands the old castle of Balmanno, regarded as a very fine example of the Scottish castle of the times of feudal lordship, still retaining the fosse and other features of ancient defense, and of course haunted, having a ghostly tenant known as “Greensleeves.”

About a mile to the east once stood the village of the “Weets of Baiglie,” though the march of improvement has swept it entirely away. The old road from Edinburgh goes past it, and it is said that it was at this point where the invading Romans, turning the shoulder of the hill, came in sight of the vast valley of the Tay, and having the home feeling excited, exclaimed, “Ecce Tiber, ecce Campus Martinus!” (“Behold the Tiber! Behold the Field of Mars!”) The author of Historic Scenes in Perthshire writes, “The exclamation was a compliment to the Tiber rather than to the Tay, and we sympathize with Sir Walter Scott when he wrote—

“‘Behold the Tiber!’ the vain Roman cried,
Viewing the ample Tay from the Baiglie’s side;
But where’s the Scot that would the vaunt repay,
And hail the puny Tiber for the Tay?”

There was also a William Weetit in Weets of Baiglie, who had six children registered in the books of Dron Parish; Jean, born June 11, 1770; Cecilly, b. February 27, 1772; Janet, b. June 4, 1774; Mary, b. March 3, 1776; Isbell, b. August 9, 1779; May, b. August 24, 1781. Although there is no positive authority, it is a fairly inferrible that this William was another son of James, of Easter Moncrieff.

It will be noticed that Lawrence (iv.) names one of his boys, William—apparently complying with a custom common in Scotland, and already referred to in the record of James, i., of naming children after near relatives—and that in the family of William (v.) occur two daughters named respectively Mary and May; hence, and also from his residence in the same neighborhood, we may reasonably accept their being of the same stock.

Of the three children of Lawrence by his first wife, neither the records of Dron, nor of any of the neighboring parishes, supply any clew, none of their names being found registered as having been married, or as having perpetuated the name by births. The fourth child, Robert, is recorded as living at Kirk-Dron, and had recorded the births of three children, a son named James, born May 18, 1788; another son named Robert, born January 24, 1789; and a daughter, named Margaret, born July 26, 1792.

William Weetet [son of Lawrence, iv.; son of James, iii.; son of Andrew, ii.; son of James, i.] Born —— 1769; married November 22, 1790, Margaret Low, daughter of Andrew Low, blacksmith, and his wife Mary Grimmon, Wester Rhynd. (Her birth is recorded in the Parish of Rhynd, as of July 12, 1773, and “baptized the following Sabbath, after divine service.”)

Issue.

  2. James, born December 23, 1792.
  3. Lawrence, born —— 1795 (?).
  4. William, born —— 1797 (?).
  5. Annie, born —— 1799 (?); died in infancy.
  6. Andrew, born February 28, 1802.
  7. John, born —— 1804 (?); died in infancy.
  8. Charles, born June 27, 1807.

  11. Peter, born June 28, 1814; died in infancy.
  12. Alexander, born Thursday, November 28, 1816.

There is no data which can be depended upon to inform us concerning his early life before marriage. From an inscription in his old Bible, referred to at the close of this sketch, he is spoken of in 1789 as of the Crossgates, which is in the Parish of Dron, where he passed the later years of his life; but in the registry of his marriage it is stated that both he and his wife were of the Parish of Rhynd, from which we infer that he must have been employed at that time in some capacity which required his residence there. The record is as follows:

“1790.—William Wittite and Margaret Low, both in this parish, after having been regularly proclaimed in order to marriage, according to church rule, were married, November 22, 1790.”

The record as to her birth is as follows:

“1773.—Margaret Low, daughter of Andrew Low and Mary Grimmon, in Uppertown of Wester Rhynd, was born January 12, 1773, and baptized in church on Sabbath following, by Mr. Taylor, after divine service.”

From the dates given it will be seen that they were a very young couple, the husband just attained to his majority, while the wife is but a little over seventeen. In after years, when her first-born daughter had grown to womanhood, the mother is said to have still retained her youthful appearance, and it was a current remark that there was little to distinguish between them!

An extract from the register of births and baptisms of the Parish at Rhynd, made in 1816, and now in the possession of his grandson (Robert, vii.), states that James, his second child and oldest son, was born at Balhepburn. As this place is a farm “town” in the Parish of Rhynd, we may assume that he was there employed simply as a ploughman or farm servant. How long he may have continued to reside in that neighborhood we have not been able to ascertain, nor have we found any record of the birth of the next three additions to his family. We find him afterwards the owner of one of the large flat boats or barges which bring sand for building purposes to the city of Perth, and as the rivers Tay and Earn, from which the sand is procured, bound the Parish of Rhynd on the east and south, it is probable that he early endeavored to improve his condition, and engaged in this new pursuit. He had removed to Perth before 1802, where we find recorded the birth of his son Andrew, who was his fifth child; and from this time to 1816, when we find the birth of his youngest son registered in Perth, there is no doubt as to his place of residence and occupation. Not long after this he removed to his native parish of Dron, renting a small farm and cottage at Crossgates, near to the old Castle of Balmanno. Here he remained, reared his large family, and saw all of them embarked on the voyage of life, until the weight of years enfeebled him for their burdens, and he retired to a small cottage near to the parish church of Dron, where both he and his better half continued until the close of “life’s fitful fever,” well stricken in years, reaching to nearly the venerable four score. They were bath laid to a peaceful rest in the old church-yard of Dron, near to the south wall.

In the old Bible that formerly belonged to him, now in the possession of Mr. Charles S. Whittet (vii.), Perth, is the following curious inscription, evidently written in a spirit of drollery by some genial friend from whom he had received it:

“Erected to the memory of William Wittet, Crossgates, bought and received this Book upon the 22nd day of November 1789 years, and he has got the loan of it till the 28th day of December, 2999; and further, he make his use of this book until that time is run out.

“2nd. And if I don’t call for it ’gin that time, he may keep it until it is called for. Signed by me, John Stewart.”

V. Charles Weetet [son of Lawrence, iv.; son of James, iii,; son of Andrew, ii.; son of James, i.]. Born —— 1771. Married Janet Glass. Died about 1847.

Of the birth or marriage of Charles the records do not certify; but the circumstances of his life and death are within the memory of living friends. He was also, like his brother William, a boatman, and he and his better half, being a couple with very careful and evident habits, unblessed with a family, they lived in an humble way, but comfortably, in the house at the southwest corner of South Street and Speygate, Perth, The writer of the present paragraph first saw the light and passed his childhood years in the first floor of the same house, and can remember his frequent visits to his warm-hearted grand-aunt on the floor above, and how liberally she used to treat him to biscuit and jelly. She died, though the incident of her death is forgotten; but the infatuation of the old man to take to himself a young wife is remembered, and also the fact that he had good cause to regret his choice, for she soon brought him into straits and poverty, and ultimately deserted him. He lived to a good old age, however, and his latter days were smoothed by the kind attentions of the widow of his nephew, James, and he was laid respectably to rest in the Greyfriars Cemetery, about 1847.

VI. Mary Weetet [daughter of William, v.; son of Lawrence, iv.; son of James, iii.; son of Andrew, ii.; son of James, i.] Born —— 1791. Married William McDonald, shoemaker, Edinburgh. Died about 1856.

Issue.

1, William McDonald; 2, John; 3, Charles; 4, Donald.

Of many and her family little is known. Marrying and settling in Edinburgh in the days before the introduction of cheap postage or railroad communication, separation from the other members of her family gradually allowed them to drift apart. She is supposed to have died in Edinburgh about 1865. Her oldest son, William, learned the trade of a bookbinder, and with his brother John, enlisted in the army, and both are said to have died in India. The youngest son followed the trade of his father, a shoemaker, but has dropped from notice.

VI. James Whittet [son of William, v.; son of Lawrence, iv.; son of James, iii.; son of Andrew, ii.; son of James, i.]. Born at Balhepburn, Parish of Rhynd, December 23, 1792. Married Elizabeth Jackson, of Carlisle, widow of James Robertson. (Died November, 1867, aged seventy.)

Issue.

  1. Maria Frances Whittet, born July 14, 1822; baptized by the Rev. Forest Frew, of the “Relief” church, July 21, 1822; died April 4, 1845.
  2. James, both June 11, 1825; baptized by the Rev. Forest Frew, June 12, 1825; died January 1, 1827.
  3. William Jackson, born May 19, 1827; baptized by Rev. Forest Frew; died March 10, 1828.
  4. Robert, born January 22, 1829; baptized by Rev. Forest Frew, January 25, 1829.
  5. James Robertson, born July 1, 1831; died March 2, 1833.
  6. Thomas, born January 25, 1834; baptized by Rev. Forest Frew February 2, 1834; died at Montreal, Canada, February 24, 1870.
  7. Elizabeth, born November 18, 1838; baptized by Rev. William Lindsay December 9, 1838.

The record of the birth of James, in the sessional books of the Parish of Rhynd, agreeable to an extract therefrom in the possession of his son (Robert, vii.), is as follows:

“James, son of William Weetit and Margaret Low, in Balhepburn, was born in the twenty-third day of December, seventeen hundred and ninety-two, and baptized the Sabbath following. Extracted from the register of Births and Baptisms of this Parish of Rhynd, the fifth day of May, eighteen hundred and sixteen years.

“Lawr. Adamson, Ses. Clk.

From the fact that his father had removed his residence to the city of Perth before 1802, and that the birth of his youngest brother, Alexander, is recorded in the sessional books there in 1816, we know that his life from early youth was passed in the Fair City. At that time Perth was somewhat famous as a publishing centre, and the printing trade was of considerable importance. The Perthshire Courier was begun in 1809 by the Messrs. Morison, and in their printing office James was put to learn the trade which he followed as a life occupation. The printing office was then situated at 25 High Street, known as the Old Ship Close, and he was not a little proud when, many year after, he became the proprietor by purchase of the premises in which he had first learned his trade. His first essay in business, however, was in an attic of the house No. 4 South Street, where he lived on the first floor. His business soon developed into larger proportions, and he removed to St. John Street, to premises over the “Cross Keys Tavern,” which was at that time a great resort of the country carriers, and stood where now stands the shops immediately south of the Central Bank building. Here he became the first printer of the Perth Constitutional, a paper issued by the Conservative party in the heated controversy about the time of the Reform Bill, about 1835. This was not of long continuance, however, the projectors becoming their own printers. He shortly after became contractor for printing another venture in the newspaper way, this time in the interest of the Liberal, or Radical, party, the Perth Chronicle. He had meantime purchased the premises in 25 High Street, above referred to, and the newspaper was printed and issued by him from the same quarters where the Courier had first seen the light, and where he had his first introduction to the art of printing. The company again instituted their own printing plant, however, when he at once resigned the stock held by him in the venture, and thereafter continued to prosecute the business in commercial work, which he did very successfully until his death, which occurred on January 1, 1840, by accidental drowning, in the forty-seventh year of his age.

He, his widow (who died November, 1867, aged seventy), and four of their children rest in the Greyfriars burying-ground, in the City of Perth. This is hallowed ground, being the site of a religious house, the Greyfriars Monastery, founded in 1460, but destroyed in 1559 during the turbulent period of the Reformation, when, after a famous sermon by John Knox, delivered in St. John’s Church, the “rascall multitude,” as he described them, rose en masse and tore down the altars and the monasteries with which the city abounded. The Greyfriars Monastery was thoroughly swept away, and in 1580 the grounds were appropriated for a public burying-ground. The following is the entry in the kirk session register concerning it, “The Greyfriars Burying Ground extends to about three and a half acres, was set apart as a burying-ground on 20th December, 1580.” The oldest tombstone bears date 1580.

VI. Lawrence Weetet [son of William, v.; son of Lawrence, iv.; son of James, iii.; son of Andrew, ii.; son of James, i.]. Born —— 1795.

A memorandum in his father’s Bible says,

“1822.—Sept. 2, Lawrence left our house, and went to Edinburgh; sailed from Leith Roads, in the ship Andromeda, of London; James Muddie, master, on the l4th, for New South Wales.” A newspaper clipping of that time, which has been preserved, says, “On Monday, the 14th inst., the ship Andromeda, of London, sailed from Leith Roads for New South Wales, with sixty-seven passengers, all of whom are very respectable people. The vessel has on board a full cargo of merchandise, and a great number of agricultural implements.”

He was never known to have written home to his friends. Inquiry has been made in the neighborhood he went to, by advertisement and otherwise, in the endeavor to discover any information concerning him, and it has been ascertained that he married, was at one time in Hobart Town, and, as far as can be learned, died at Longford, Van Dieman’s Land. No one of the name answered the advertisements, and it is not known whether he left any descendants. One who remembered him writes,

“He was one of the first blacksmiths to start business in Hobart, and the Governor gave him an allottment for shoeing his horses.”

VI. William Whittet [son of William, v.; son of Lawrence, iv.; son of James, iii.; son of Andrew, ii.; son of James, i.] Born —— 1797. Married Margaret Stevens, of Blair Athole, Perthshire. Died 1846.

Issue.

  1. Thomas Whittet, born Sept. 13, 1836.
  2. Margaret, born March 10, 1839. Died at Lochee February 26, 1894.
  3. William, born at Coupar Fife, September 23, 1841.
  4. Barbara, born December 13, 1845.

William was a coach painter by trade, and his father’s house at Crossgates bore many evidences of his skill in heraldry painting. He afterwards removed to Dundee, where, in addition to his trade, he kept a tavern. After his death, which occurred in 1846, his widow and family removed to Blairgowrie, where the former died in 18—, and those of his family surviving still live.

VI. Andrew Whittet [son of William, v.; son of Lawrence, iv.; son of James, iii.; son of Andrew, ii.; son of James, i.]. Born at Perth, February 28, 1802; baptized by the Rev. David Sangster, minister of the “Relief” congregation. Married Helen Gilmore, !1827. Died at Edinburgh, May 16, 1853.

  11. Susan, born January 7, 1851; died at Dunshalt, Fifeshire, August 26, 1900.

Andrew was a stonemason, or builder, and after following his occupation in the Parish of Dron, where his father had settled, he removed to the City of Edinburgh, where, with the able help of an energetic helpmeet, he raised a large family, giving to them an excellent education. He died May 16, 1853, and was buried in —— Cemetery, Edinburgh.

VI. Charles Whittet [son of William, v.; son of Lawrence, iv.; son of James, iii.; son of Andrew, ii.; son of James, i.]. Born at Perth June 27, 1807, baptized by the Rev. Charles Cumming, minister of the Dissenting Congregation of Errol, July 20, 1807. Married Jean Fisher, of the Parish of Forgandenny. Died at Crossgates, Dron, February 6, 1858.

  6. James, born March 3, 1845.
  7. Charles, born May 25, 1848.

Charles learned the shoemaker trade, under the instruction of the husband of his oldest sister, Mary, in Edinburgh, and followed it in after life, at the Crossgates, in the Parish of Dron, occupying the house adjoining his father’s, where all his children were born, and where he died. He and his wife were devoted members of the Free Church of Scotland, leaving the Established Church at the time of the Disruption, and attaching their membership to the church at Bridge of Earn, three miles distant; and it was inclement weather indeed that prevented their presence in their wonted places in the sanctuary at the times of regular service. His wife, Jean Fisher, was a full cousin of the late Rev. William Arnott, D.D., the greatly esteemed minister and well-known writer. She died at Perth, —— 1876.

VI. May [daughter of William, v.; son of Lawrence, iv.; son of James, iii.; son of Andrew, ii.; son of James, i.]. Born —— 1809. Married Thomas Rodgie, of Pottiehill, Parish of Dron. Died January 2, 1862; buried at Kirkton of Craigend. (Thomas Rodgie died April 4, 1874.)

Thomas Rodgie, the husband of May, was the son of the farmer of Pottiehill. He was long employed as game keeper on the lands in the neighborhood belonging to Col. Belshes of Invermay. Their place of residence was at the village of Newbigging, where she died. Thomas died at the same place, April 4, 1874.

VI. David Whittet [son of William, v.; son of Lawrence, iv.; son of James, iii.; son of Andrew, ii.; son of James, i.]. Born March 7, 1812; baptized March 29th, by the Rev. Forest Frew, minister of the “Relief” congregation. Married Elizabeth Stobie, of the Parish of Gask (died November 21, 1897, aged ninety-three). Died at Methven, —— 1852.

Issue.

  1. William, born at Drummond, Gask, March 31, 1833; died at Oakland, California, January 21. 1887.
  2. Charles Stobie, born at Keillor, parish of Fowlis Wester, February 2, 1835.

  7. Bella, born at Keillor, May 29, 1844; died 1846.
  8. James, born at Keillor, August 4, 1846.

David learned the trade of a blacksmith with a family friend, Mr. Alexander Grieve, at Crossgates, Dron, and afterwards began business on his own account at Keillor, in the Parish of Fowlis Wester; from thence he removed to the village of Methven, where he died in 1852. His widow removed to Edinburgh, where she lived with her daughter (Amelia, vii.) till the time of her death, which occurred November 21, 1897, at the patriarchal age of ninety-three years and eight months. She expressed a wish to be laid to rest beside her beloved granddaughter (Lizzie, viii.), the daughter of her son (Charles, vii.), and her remains were accordingly brought to Perth, and laid in Wellshill Cemetery there. A friend has written of her as follows; and no doubt the portrayal of the beautiful character she has left behind, as well as the excellence of the verses, will make their insertion here welcome:

NINETY AN’ THREE.

Ninety an’ three! hoo the years hae flown by,
To Death’s darksome valley my footsteps draw nigh,
But, Lord, Thou’lt be wi’ me when death comes to me.
For Thou hast been wi’ me till ninety an’ three.

I’ve seen the best friends o’ my youth laid to sleep
Whaur the bonnie girse waves an’ the dark willows weep,
No ane o’ their forms noo around me I see,
But, Lord. Thou’rt still wi’ me at ninety an’ three.

Sair heart-sinkin’ sorrows at times I hae fund,
My dearest an’ nearest I’ve laid i’ the grund.
But, Lord, their dear souls are rejoicin’ wi’ Thee,
An’ this gies me comfort at ninety an’ three.

But a’ are no gane, there are some wi’ me yet,
Whose kindness an’ love, Lord. Thou wilt not forget,
They tend me an’ cheer me, and doat upon me,
Sae life maun be sweet e’en at ninety an’ three.

I like to see beauty in every form—
I’ the glare o’ the sun an’ the gloom o’ the storm,
I’ the brightest o’ gems, an’ the fluoer o’ the lea—
They a’ help to cheer me at ninety an’ three.

But still, when the ca’ comes I winna be feard.
For it I am waitin’, for it I’m prepared,
I’ll lippen to Christ, an’ He’ll no forsake me.
For He’s been my Freend till I’m ninety an’ three.

I’ll welcome the summons that ca’s me awa’
To bide ’mang the hosts i’ the heavenly ha’;
An’ sune I maun hear it, ’twill sune come to me,
It canna be lang sin’ I’m ninety an’ three.
     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *
And now from her Lord the summons has come,
So sweetly and gently He carried her home;
She waited with patience all these long years to see
God’s goodness to her, though past ninety an’ three.

VI. Alexander Whittet [son of William, v.; son of Lawrence, iv.; son of James, iii.; son of Andrew, ii.; son of James, i.]. Born November 28, 1816. Married Christina Clark (born August 2, 1817; died November 12, 1893). Died at Dundee, December 9, 1877.

The above Alexander was the youngest son of William, v., and, like his brother David, became a blacksmith, learning the trade under the instruction of their neighbor, Mr. Alexander Grieve. After a time he rented the smith’s shop at “The Preens,” in the Ochills, where he married Christina Clark, and where four of their older children were born. He removed from “The Preens” to Gateside in November, 1848; to Broadwell, near Abernethy, in 1853; to Abernethy in 1854; then to Auchtermuchty, Fifeshire, in 1865, and finally to the city of Dundee, where he died, Dec. 9, 1877. His good wife lived after him till November 12, 1893, when she died at the ripe age of seventy- six. She had been in frail health for some time, but with strong faith she looked to her departure being near, repeating frequently the lines—

Alexander Whittet and Wife. (vi.)

  10. Margaret Jackson (Daisy), born at 428 Ninth Street, Washington, D. C., 12:05 a. m., February 22, 1874.

Robert is now the oldest representative in the family descent (but without family inheritance!). His father (James, vi.) having died while he was quite young, he was early inducted into the world of labor. The years devoted to education were short, but they were passed under a thorough teacher at the Stewart School for the Sons of Burgesses, and they were afterwards sedulously improved by private study, In 1842, while little over thirteen years of age he was entered apprentice as a printer in the same premises where his father had learned his trade, and afterwards conducted business. He completed a term of seven years, and in 1849 obtained a situation in Aberdeen, where he remained two years, and in 1851, visited London. His sojourn there, however, was not permanent, and he returned to Scotland, and worked in Edinburgh until 1852, when, much against his desire, he was called back to Perth, to take up the business formerly conducted by his father, and where he had passed his early years. It had never ceased to be of pecuniary interest to his mother, and he dutifully laid aside other ideas which he had shaped for his course of life, and assumed the proprietorship of the printing office, and began business on his own account, in 1852. Here he continued until 1869, greatly enlarging his capacity for work, and was the first to introduce steam power for printing into the city. In 1866 he built a comfortable villa on the side of Kinnoull Hill, overlooking the city, which he named “The Beild,” and to which he removed his household, and where he lived until the above year 1869, when he took a fancy—an unfortunate step, as it afterwards proved—to emigrate to Virginia, where, after the close of the war of the Confederacy, large quantities of land were offered for little money; and the picture of rural life in the Sunny South seemed to offer an elegant ease after many years of fight with excessive business competition and close and arduous labor.

On October 15, 1869, he sailed from Glasgow, having, besides his own immediate family, agricultural servants and implements, with the view of beginning rural life in the New World. On reaching New York he was joined by his cousin (James, vii.; son of Charles, vi.), who had been brought up in agricultural pursuits, and had had several years’ experience in Canada, and they proceeded south to Williamsburg, in the State of Virginia. To this place several cousins of his wife, Alexander McLean, Esq., and sisters, had preceded him earlier in the same year, and were indeed the influence that drew him to this particular district. Here he purchased a plantation of four hundred acres, just east of the city boundary of Williamsburg. Only a little while before the place had been the scene of carnage, and showed the ravages of war in having neither fence nor house upon it. Here he built a house and suitable premises for the conduct of the farm, and soon had an apparently flourishing little colony. The result, however, proved disastrously unprofitable, and he found it necessary to give up his dream of rural occupation, and return to his old art of printing; and after an experience of considerable vicissitude and misfortune, at last found a haven in the city of Richmond, where, with his sons James (viii.) and Robert, Jr., (viii.) he may be found any day at the post of duty. They are publishers of Sabbath-school literature for the Presbyterian Church of the United States (Southern).

By way of pastime his tastes have run towards reading and literature rather than to outdoor sports, though he has been not by any means a recluse, but has also enjoyed these greatly in a quiet way. With the poets especially has he found much of his pleasures, and in the diction of flowing numbers has himself endeavored to express the sentiment of reflective hours, and written enough to have his name enrolled among those of Scotch extraction who, with similar tastes, have expressed their ideas in poetry. A notice of him and his work in this way will be found in a volume issued by John D. Ross, Esq., LL. D., entitled The Scottish American Poets. Robert’s volume was published in 1882, and is entitled The Brighter Side of Suffering, and Other Poems. Into this he wrought not only the fruit of his own poetic fancies, but also considerable personal history, his own trying reverses in fortune, as well as those of some others with whom he was associated, affording him plenty of material with which to embellish his theme. The volume is now out of print and scarce. He has just issued another volume, which is entitled Sonnets on Scripture Themes, and a Few Other Poems. Included among these “other poems” is one which had the honor of presentation to Her Majesty, and accompanied a loyal address by the British subjects resident in Virginia on the occasion of Her Majesty’s Jubilee in 1887.

A kind providence has now preserved his span of life beyond the three score years and ten, and though the grey hairs are many, yet is the portrait of the scriptural patriarch applicable, that “the eye is not dimmed nor his natural force abated.”

His present address is 102 East Marshall Street, Richmond, Va.

The life of William (vii.) was somewhat chequered and wandering, as the following particulars, furnished by his brother (Charles S., vii.) will show: After sewing his apprenticeship as a gardener with Messrs. Dickson & Turnbull, of Perth, Scotland, he emigrated to the United States, and was employed with his uncle, Charles Stobie, florist, Baltimore, Md.; at this time he was little over sixteen years of age. He removed to Toronto, Canada, where he held a situation as gardener; but afterwards began business as a market gardener, hut not being so successful as to satisfy his expectations, he returned to the States, where he was employed as gardener to General Butler, Lowell, Mass. He afterwards went to Indiana, and was superintendent of the Agricultural College of that State. The directors of that institution spoke very highly of his services there, and said that the college had never been so well managed as while under him. He left Indiana, removing to some point in Tennessee, where he began business with two others as florists; but this was also given up, and he went to Chicago, Ill., and was employed in laying out the Central Park there. From Chicago he went to Oakland, Cal., where he was employed at Mountain View Cemetery until his death in l857.

The following sketch is autobiographic, was written at our request, and will be read with much interest:

“Mine has been a life of very varied experience. I became a carpenter, and finished my apprenticeship in 1853, married in 1856, and with my young wife emigrated to Canada. We went to Toronto, and I found employment there. My employer was a Scotchman—an elder in the church, too—and he failed in business, and I lost—I thought I was cheated—out of fifty dollars—all my years savings! I was left without a cent to welcome our first-born, and at the same time my wife was in poor health. However, in my extremity I met a great deal of kindness. Our landlord, and the merchants with whom we had been dealing, extended to us a generous credit; but after getting employment again, I paid up every indebtedness.

“Our second daughter was born in June, 1858, and at this time another misfortune overtook us, in the loss of all my tools in a fire, and I was laid up by an accident to my head. On recovery I left Canada and went to New York, and worked there for some time; but was afterwards engaged to go to Albany to work upon St. John’s Church, State Street, and I was afterwards with Messrs. Wheeler & Melick, implement makers.

“Our third daughter, Isabella, was born on August 26, 1860, and the following day another misfortune overtook us in the burning of our dwelling house. The nurse and myself carried my poor wife and baby out to the garden, and then I managed to save the lives of our two girls; but that was all, for everything we had was consumed. But again kind strangers came to our assistance, for when I endeavored to purchase goods to refurnish our home, on promise to pay in the future, the merchants generously let me have what I required, and kindly told me my face was a fair security!1 And they were afterwards paid in full with a heart full of gratitude.

“In 1883 I visited America again, and endeavored to find those kind strangers, who had so befriended me in extremity, both in Toronto and Albany, to thank them over again. Some I found; but the changes of time had removed most of them, and I was denied what would have been a most gratifying pleasure.

“While in Albany I was a volunteer in the Tenth Regiment, and was one of the escort of President Lincoln on the occasion of his visit to Albany. My wife was alarmed lest our regiment should be sent to the front during the war of secession, and was most anxious to go home to the old country. I put her off for some time, but at last we agreed to toss up for a decision. I lost, and so had to yield, though reluctantly, and I put off the uniform the day we left. My captain sent his wagon to take our luggage to the steamer, and sent my wife two bottles of wine!

“We sailed from New York, but were chased by the Southern privateer Nashville, and were lucky in not being knocked to the bottom! We arrived in the Fair City, tired and poor, in 1862, and I obtained work with the late Mr. Robert Murray, joiner. While working thus I was chosen by my fellow-workmen to represent them at a conference of joiners to formulate rules for the Joiners’ Society of Scotland. We sat in convention for eight days.

“I had long wished to begin business on my own account, but having no capital, I did not see my way to make a start. At this time cousin Robert resolved to build a double villa for himself, and he urged me to undertake the carpenter work, and offered to advance the money, which would form a capital to enable me to carry on business. He did so, and I began on the 6th of March, 1866, Cousin Bob also used to assist me in making out estimates, and calculations for contracts, until he left me to shift for myself, by running off to America, in l869. Since that time I have carried through several important contracts to the satisfaction of every one, of which I may specify the Free West Church, the Savings Bank Building, St. Stephens Free Church, the J. Pullar & Son’s Works at Tulloch, Hotel at County Place; the Established Church at Forteviot, Mr. Guthrie’s mansion-house at West Ferry, Mr. Mathew’s mansion-house at Auchmague, and many others, besides having erected houses to the value of about eighteen thousand pounds sterling on my own account.

“In building the Free West Church I designed the scaffolding for the spire, and it attracted considerable attention. Sir Gilbert Scott, of London, sent a representative to see it, and the London papers described it, and said that ‘there had been nothing like it seen north of the Tweed!’ They might as truthfully have said south of it as well. The drawing which I made to guide my foreman in putting it up was shown to Mr. Honeyman, architect, Glasgow, and he requested me to let him have it, which I did. I afterwards heard that he took it to London, and laid it before the Society of Architects, and that it was hung on their walls. Several architects have asked me for photographs of it, and I have always complied with their request.

“In 1883 my health gave way, and in hope of recuperating, I made a visit to the United States and Canada. I returned somewhat improved; but soon after it entirely gave way, and I was compelled to reliquish business entirely in 1889. Since then my troubles have been many, but a relation of them would not be desirable. I have endeavored to live an independent life, and hope to do so to the end.”

1Bravo!—that is so much to put to the audit of the family features.—Robert vii.

William Whittet devoted his talents to mechanics, and now carries on business as a sewing machine maker at 39 Castle Street, Dundee. To him the family are indebted for the information contained in this record. He has made the subject for many years a matter of interest to himself, and has spent much time in the investigation of the records of births and deaths in the several parishes where it was expected information might be discovered, also of the great old tomes preserved in the Register House, Edinburgh, as well as interviewing those “oldest inhabitants” wherever they could be found, who might be the custodiers of information useful to his purpose. On the whole, he has been wonderfully successful, as this record we think proves. He has also, more than any of the others, kept himself in touch with the other members and offshoots, and we may well recognize that, without his indefatigable interest and investigation, the several branches must have drifted further and further apart, and lost all record of their origin, as other septs bearing the name have done in the farther back past, Let us extend to him our grateful thanks; and when we look on his portrait, and on the other picture of him and his big household, let us regard him as one of our kindred to whom we are under special obligations.

Appendix.

Since the first pages of this work were sent to press a further examination of the record has been made, and the opinion of experts obtained, to decipher, if possible, the writing, with a view to discover the name of the wife of our earliest ancestor, James Weittet, of Kintillo, which had to be left in black on page 21. The opinion arrived at is that her name was “Margaret Brewes.” Though this name is not now a common one, there are several instances of its occurrence in the older records. One of these will be found under the date 1677 in this Appendix, where “Robert Brewes” is a witness at the baptism of James’ youngest son, and our second ancestor, Andrew.
